Farakka Barrage (Dam)
▪️It is a barrage across the Ganga river
▪️It is located at Farakka of Murshidabad district in West Bengal
▪️It is roughly about 10.5 Km
▪️Constructed in 1961-1975
▪️Main objective of the barrage is to divert water from Ganges to the Bhagirathi Hooghly river system to preserve and maintain Kolkata port
▪️The barrage divides Ganges water to Hooghly river and to Bangladesh
▪️It serves water to Farakka super thermal power station and also for drinking purposes
▪️ It resulted in salinity ingress and flooding in Bangladesh
▪️In India, it leads to flooding in Bihar, population reduction of Hilsa in West Bengal and more silting in Kolkata port
